It has a large, fleshy rhizome and the alternate, lanceolate leaves are blades of 60 cm long, smooth and dark green above, pale glaucous green and finely silky beneath. The flowering stems spread horizontally near the ground. The fruits are 8-15 mm long, ovoid or oblong, pale yellowish in colour. They contain small seeds of dark, brown-reddish colour.
