A perennial deciduous small shrub, native to the West Indies and also found in the northern South America, growing up to 4 m. Acerola is one of the richest known sources of Vitamin C. Oranges provide 500 to 4'000 ppm ascorbic acid, while Acerola has assayed in a range of 15'000 to 175'000 ppm Vitamin C.
