Devil's Claw is a native plant of southern Africa, especially the Kalahari desert, Namibia and the island of Madagascar. H. procumbens, also named Sengaparile (Tswana) or duiwelsklou (Afrikaans), belongs to the family of the Pedaliaceae. It is a perennial plant with annual stems spreading from a central tuber. Flowering red. The thick, fleshy secondary roots are the only parts which are used medicinally.
