Native to North America. Cultivated for centuries, E. purpurea is the only species of the genus which has been domesticated. Flowering from June to October with colour ranging from rose to purple. There is more pubescence in wild populations from the western segment of the species range, and a tendency toward the more glabrous in the east of the States.
